Legacy
Campaigns
The Legacy Campaigns empower youth to lead grassroots advocacy in their community for environmental justice, public health, and community preservation.
Students actively work with Legacy LA staff to combat gentrification, push for mental health and substance use prevention policies, and transform polluted spaces in Ramona Gardens into green community assets.
Campaigns
-
Invest In Youth
The Invest in Youth Coalition advocates not for simply any investment, but we demand an equitable investment- one where every community will receive specific investments based on factors like poverty, education, and the existing nonprofit services.
-
Environmental Justice: Green Barrier Natural Park
Legacy is advocating and has made serious headway on creating a Green Barrier Natural Park between Ramona Gardens and the 15 lane I10 freeway. Combining ecosystem science, engineering and community priorities, the Natural Park will create an Anti-Pollution Green Buffer ‘Nature in the City”.
-
Anti-Gentrification
Legacy is currently advocating and negotiating for a Community Benefits Agreement contract between a developer (in our case, USC) and community-based organizations representing residents’ interests. The agreement spells out the benefits the community will receive in return for supporting the developer’s project in their neighborhood.
-
Substance Use Disorders
Legacy is advocating to end substance use disorders in youth and increase youth mental health services in SELA. Presently, we are advocating for a citywide ban on billboards advertising substances (cannabis, alcohol) within 1200 ft of schools, daycares, youth and community centers.
Through hands-on organizing, policy proposals, and steering committees, Legacy Youth gain real-world experience in civic leadership and social change.
