How do youth feel about their community and what do they want?

The Hazard Park Armory is ideally located to meet the needs of one of the most violent communities in Los Angeles:  Ramona  Gardens.  Legacy  LA will focus on creating a haven of peace and safety while encouraging a deeper understanding of the community's pluralistic environment, from the ecological, to the cultural, to the personal.  By coordinating a collaborative of local artists, musicians, medical professionals, counselors, mentors, tutors, academic and vocational educators as well as community organizations, Legacy LA seeks to promote a greener, cleaner and healthier  Los Angeles.  The Legacy LA collaborative will work directly with LAUSD, LACOE, LAPD, and LASD to directly impact school achievement and foster non-violent choices at school and in the community.

HISTORY

Legacy LA, a Community Partners project, is a grassroots startup organization dedicated to building a legacy of empowerment for the impoverished communities of East Los Angeles at the Hazard Park Federal Armory site. We are a collaborative community organization partnering with the City of Los Angeles with a critical goal to transform a weathered 1950s Armory building and five acres of urban parkland into a state-of-the-art facility offering multifaceted educational, cultural, and recreational services and programs. The collaborative will serve as a new model of youth care to improve the health of at-risk communities by delivering and promoting preventative services.

MISSION

The mission of Legacy LA is to make positive interventions in the lives of young people by offering alternatives to gangs and violence, and giving them social and cultural capital to have greater access to the world. Legacy is dedicated to increasing opportunities for the youth of our community. Our programs promote independent thinking and accountability: designed by, staffed by, governed by and dreamed of by this community. By coordinating a collaborative of youth and mentors including local artists, musicians, medical professionals, counselors, tutors, academic and vocational educators as well as grassroots community organizations, Legacy LA seeks to promote a healthier, stronger, greener, Los Angeles.

 VISION

Legacy LA has completed a thorough planning process supported by funding from the Annenberg Foundation, The California Endowment, and the City of Los Angeles that has engaged local residents and youth and ultimately guided the creation of the conceptual designs for the five-acre Hazard Park Armory site and the program model for their communities. The next step is to develop a program plan and create a governing structure that is inclusive of community. The planning process will result in a youth-driven plan for programming, with wrap-around youth development services from the arts and sciences to mentoring and job training.

We are creating a center for culture, for recreation, and for academic opportunities on a scale never seen before in the City of Los Angeles, and believe that the transformation of the Hazard Park Armory will serve as a successful model for preventative services for at-risk communities throughout the nation.
